Sometimes this happens and it requires a hard reboot to fix. Is it something to do with my motherboard or graphics chip, or something stupid like a connection?

Thanks again. Yes, it is just a card in a slot. I just opened the case and discovered the graphics card has a small fan mounted on the top. I inserted the cable back into the power supply, booted it up, and found out the fan is no longer turning. Could the graphics card have critically overheated at some point and failed?

It could have failed by overheating or the PC covered your butt my stopping the card from baking the motherboard. If there is way to replace that fan do it.

Yes, I could replace the fan if I bought the part. However, don’t you think the card is already compromised?

possible. I would replace the fan first. Run a diagnostic and hope it is okay.
