Sometimes this happens and it requires a hard reboot to fix. Is it something to do with my motherboard or graphics chip, or something stupid like a connection?

It could have failed by overheating or the PC covered your butt my stopping the card from baking the motherboard. If there is way to replace that fan do it.

Yes, I could replace the fan if I bought the part. However, don’t you think the card is already compromised?

possible. I would replace the fan first. Run a diagnostic and hope it is okay.

Also worth noting that this is like a 64 mb card that uses the old school PCI bus lol doubt I could find a compatible fan for this dinosaur for a justifiable price, was just looking at a new 1gb PCIE 2.0x16 for $60
