Sometimes this happens and it requires a hard reboot to fix. Is it something to do with my motherboard or graphics chip, or something stupid like a connection?

Update: Big Major Success!

This is a Radeon HD 5450, which is actually a massive upgrade from what I had. I just need my recording software to display so it’s actually overkill.

This unit also has the advantage of having a big chunk of heatsink instead of a fan, so I shouldn't have to worry about this one overheating.

Thanks again for the help.
