I took on a new consulting job which will necessitate me printing documents at home.

I hate home printers, I've avoided owning one for a long long time. Now I need one of these ink eating pieces of shit.

What printer am I going to hate the least?

I'm thinking a laser-jet maybe? I will only need to generate black and white documents.

whatever you do, keep away from ink jet. I have a b&w laser, I regret nothing.

Love my Brother laser printer. Least shitty printer I've ever owned. Toner cartridges are cheap, generics are offered, and the damn things last forever and a day.

Brother seems to be getting the most love in this thread.

Yeah color inkjets are complete moneypits. A b&w brother laser printer is by far the cheapest way to go.

1 - Fuck HP

2 - Fuck HP

3 - Have had good luck with Epson multi function printers (copy, scan, print), especially those with refillable ink tanks on the side. YMMV.

4 - Oh yeah, fuck printers.

5 - Canon is not the worst.

Try and find a HP laserjet from 1992-97. I have been running my laserjet 3 since 1994. Toner refills come by the gallon for 10 bucks and no DRM. Solid steel frame with high carbon chromed steel guide rails.

165 isn't bad considering it will run like a champ forever and toner is practically free.

This man speaks the truth, these will never die.

It is kind of crazy. It started printing on an Amiga 3000d when I got it, went through at least 3 windows 95/98 boxes, and about 5 Linux machines. I have done nothing for repairs minus clean the drum with anti-static wipes.

You can get a nice HP multi-function laser printer/scanner/fax for dead cheap. Toner carts. are pretty dear but waaaaaay cheaper than inkjet ink. If you're doing a higher volume ie. more than 1000 sheets a month then consider a business class model with both a higher duty cycle and a cheaper per page cost, it'll cost you more up front but in the long run you get it back.

I used to buy IT equipment for a living and had the best luck with HP (printers). I only bought a few Brothers and they were crap but others have had good luck with the brand. Samsung also makes a good home quality printer, if you can find them on sale then you probably won't be disappointed.

I went through a series of court cases where I had to print thousands of pages.

I did the research and the cheapest per page was the Brother Laser Printer. Brother MFC-L2710DW

It works out to less than a penny per page to print, depending one which paper you buy.

Brother is good

Canon, avoid

Brother laser all in one. Third party cartridges only cost $10 each and work great.

Get laser if all you'll do is black and white. As far as brands, they all suck. If I had to recommend one, look on the used market for an older HP 4050. The toner is really affordable and lasts a long time. And the printer itself, the only major issue it has is the rollers, and thats not expensive or hard to fix
