I Bought a lot of Rice in Bulk Bags. I also bought Salt and Sugar, next i was thinking Cornstrach and Popcorn Kernels in Bulk. Honey, Maple Syrup, Salt, Soy Sauce, Liquor will last forever. Also White rice properly stored will last up to 20 years. Any other good deals out there that I'm forgetting about?

If you have a freezer and expect to have power, many things can be vac-sealed and stored. You just have to adjust for the changes in consistency when you do that.

I store:

Shredded cheese whipped eggs butter dry milk vegetables cured meats Spices, spice mixes, and pre-mixed ingredient packets for bread and other staples.

Things like eggs get gooey after freezing, but they're fine for using in cooking. Cheese gets sweaty, but melts fine. Sugar can get gooey as well, I only freeze-store that in mixed ingredient packs that I make up for things I like to cook often.

For things like eggs, I'll whip them and pour into silicone block soap molds, freeze, and then put the frozen brick in a bag and seal them.

There are also ones that run on natural gas if you have a healthy supply of that available.

Yeah but literally one panel could power my Sundanzer and it's set and forget.

Only downside is they are really expensive compared to a normal chest freezer, but cash is tanking anyway.

Cornmeal and flour are the two most important things you can have besides rice and beans. You can make a huge amount of stuff with just those two things and water (and salt/sugar/ egg/milk/or butter if you have it) to survive on. A cup of flour cup of cornmeal and water and a little salt and sugar,( not necessary) will make a batter like pancake batter to make flat cakes for breakfast that you can put honey or maple syrup on. Hoe cakes are the same thing but with milk .

I would recommend against buying long-term storage flour (whether wheat or corn.) When you grind it, you are breaking the storage system God created apart, and the clock starts ticking. They will both go bad rather quickly. If you want long term flour and cornmeal storage (and you do) get a good grain mill and store wheat berries and field/dent corn. Both store as well as polished rice -- if you can keep the water and the pests out, it will last virtually forever. The flour and cornmeal will be bad within 5-8 years. Also, if you want to plant more wheat or corn, you can do it from your food stores (this is where the phrase "eating your seed corn" comes from -- not leaving enough back to replant.)

The butter is a good point. Red Feather canned butter all the way. The clock may be ticking on that, though, since NZ is currently going insane.

Coffee is ok if it's sealed. Once you've opened it, it has a short shelf life.

I buy small bricks of imported coffee at an International grocery. It's more expensive, but it's vacuum sealed and it's a small enough quantity that I can drink it before it gets stale.

I buy cheap coffee like folgers and vacuum seal it. I don' t drink it but it could be a good trade item

That's a good idea. I do drink some every once in a while, so I buy it for me. Maybe buy a bigger bag and seal portions for freezing.

Coffee needs to be green beans. Roasted beans (especially ground) go stale and rancid shockingly quick.

Also, you will need to have a way to roast them and have practice at it. Youtube is your friend here.

I don't buy in bulk since there are only the two of us. Canned food lasts probably longer than you will live. I stocked up on it. Lots of canned beans. Dried beans take a lot of energy to cook. Also recently bought some dried potato flakes to try. Canned fish like tuna, salmon, sardines. Also canned soups, chili, and stew. Keep stocked up on dark chocolate for energy and mood lifting. Not for everyone...CBD extracts, candies for pain relief.

Tuna Cans can last up to 5 years i think. The problem with can is the metal, I try to stored dry stuff in Glass Jars. I know dry up Chocolate will last for like 50+ years. I once bought some dried up Chocolate Candy bars online and the expiry date on them was like 2075

Tuna cans are labeled for sale within 5 years. As for actual practice, we don't know how long it will last because we haven't been canning it long enough for them to spoil (assuming you protect the cans from corrosion.) It probably won't taste as good and might be an odd color, but it will be safe to eat if the can is intact and not dented/bulging.

Your hardest things to store are fat.

Red feather canned butter.

Bega canned cheese.

Those aren't really deals, but they are a vital part.

Salt, pepper and multivitamins. There's a reason that salt and/or peppercorns were often used as money through history. You can't buy too much salt -- it's a mineral, and never goes bad. On top of that, in a grid down situation you will be using a LOT more salt -- not just for consumption, but as a preservative.

Bulk pasta. It will give you an option for starch past the rice.

On the other hand, all of this is going to be pretty grim and just a way to get scurvy or beri-beri slowly if you don't have a garden. Even in an apartment, you have windows and can start some herbs. Olive oil, salt, pepper, the pasta and a few leaves basil and parsley from a window pot makes a MUCH better meal than plain pasta.

If you can get a garden going, grow tomatoes and squash and zucchini and cabbage, and you can get actual food that also lends itself to preservation. Learn to can (hot water bath is fine for all this, you really only need steam canners when you start putting back meat) and learn to make saurkraut.

Seriously, I thought I didn't like saurkraut until we started making our own. Even the stuff in the bags in the cooler at the store isn't as good as from your own crock. Same with tomatoes. I avoid fast food tomatoes now, because none of them are actually ripe (and most have been ruined by refrigeration as well.)

I still have a few bags of rice!

I may actually buy more, what is going on with the economic slow down is starting to worry me. The supply and demand side is no issue so the economy can rebound quickly, the artificial barriers to trade and capital flows is very worrying.

If Mountain House ever gets restocked I'll buy more of their stuff, maybe a years worth. Supposed to last 30 years and it's actually really tasty for what it is.
