I think the whole Beatles thing played out sort of like this: Lennon was saying too much early on. Jimmy Savile entered the picture to "get them in line". John pushed back too much and they warned him. Savile started ramping up the deprivation as a consequence. John gave in initially and then threatened to out him so he got killed in public to make an example. From then on, the rest of them just went big nose.
