They have the police and if needed military to enforce their decrees, if that's not authority to tell you how to live your life than I don't know what is.

That is not "authority" to tell you how to live your life; that is "power" to tell you how to live your life.
Without authority (or moral authority) the power is only good so long as another power does not come along and replace it.
