Dark Ages were coined like that because it is a period with very few written records in comparison to what came before and after. It is common to have few registries in times where the whole world had its biggest empire being dissolved from the inside and leaving room for hundreds of independent kingdoms and chieftainships slowly morphing into the Middle Ages' territories.
