"Christianity caused the dark ages" is already considered a myth in mainstream academia. Popular atheists and pop culture haven't realized that, though.

Most religions spring up from a people trying to understand the world around them. That's why there are so many different religions in different parts of the world that all try to explain the same things in different ways. Hell the Romans even had a deity that was in charge of boots.
