"Christianity caused the dark ages" is already considered a myth in mainstream academia. Popular atheists and pop culture haven't realized that, though.

I grew up in rural Mississippi and still realized religion is a bullshit tool for control of the weak. I didn't have a phone glued to my hand or internet at home either.

Most religions spring up from a people trying to understand the world around them. That's why there are so many different religions in different parts of the world that all try to explain the same things in different ways. Hell the Romans even had a deity that was in charge of boots.
