He's in remission, but the cancer does not give me the warm and fluffies. He was able to beat out the original prognosis of 1 year by 5 years now. However I would think such cancers, when they come back, become death sentences? Also how rapidly can a cancer come back if his diet is composed of chinese takeout and alcohol?

That's not how it went with my grandma, and multiple others I have known.

I'm not arguing your situation, FYI. Just stating my personal experience. Cancer is a bitch and I wouldn't wish it on any "good" human.
