You'll have to give more details, but possibly tack glue the coupling in place on one side, or use a union instead, or belt style wrench, or take pipe tape for a tight dry fit, or create a jig out of plywood, I think we need more info.

I need two hands available and my piece is about 3-4 inches long. Just a tube. I don't want to damage the outside though.

Just use two clamps on it to stabilize it, your normal f-style would be fine
