It's always been considered one of Kubrick's minor efforts; overly long and boring. And Ryan O'Neal was woefully miscast, mostly because he's not a very good actor.

Folks watched it hoping for a followup to Space Odyssey and Clockwork Orange. Not sure anyone liked it.
