I know the question in the title is probably retarded, but I’ve had the inspiration to make a video for kind of a long time now, and I’m finally only a couple weeks away from the point where I feel like I can be mostly fearless about what I post online.

I’m ideally not looking to buy some $1,500 computer program to edit together one video, can anybody make recommendations for free or cheap software that will allow me to make videos like these without needing an associate’s in digital design? Like just something that will let me take existing video clips and edit them together under a soundtrack

(This example is speech but the audio could just as easily be music)

Am pleased to say that it's all come a long way since I started with it in '97. On mainstream hardware it mostly "just works" now and Kubuntu has finally got a decent "app store" type app called Discover.

Best thing of all is you can download an image to make a bootable thumb drive and play with it on your machine without ever installing it (does not disturb your C drive). Win win.
