I know the question in the title is probably retarded, but I’ve had the inspiration to make a video for kind of a long time now, and I’m finally only a couple weeks away from the point where I feel like I can be mostly fearless about what I post online.

I’m ideally not looking to buy some $1,500 computer program to edit together one video, can anybody make recommendations for free or cheap software that will allow me to make videos like these without needing an associate’s in digital design? Like just something that will let me take existing video clips and edit them together under a soundtrack

(This example is speech but the audio could just as easily be music)

Try OpenShot FOSS NLVE. It's open source, it's no cost, it's good.

Then when you're done wipe your C drive and install a true powerful functional operating system where you're the boss and not the product.

Meaning? Linux? I almost never use my actual computer for anything

Yes. Kubuntu or Mint. I'm your case, then, it'd be a painless functional transition. Chrome is Chrome (if that is your preference, there are better options when it comes to privacy). Libre Office productivity suite rivals Word before it began to suck. And as a reward you get to ditch the instrumentation that sucks your privacy like a vat of leeches, you get a performance boost and improved security footprint because you get to ditch all of the antivirus crap.

So yes, mull it over sometime. You'll have no regrets once a few paradigm shifts settle in upon you.

I’m not opposed to it, but wouldn’t know where to start. I used to consider myself technologically adept but at some point I just stopped paying attention
