It's a sorta response to the common trope of "well if the Earth goes to shit we can move to another planet". The author makes the case that we are specifically evolved over millions of years to one specific environment. We cannot survive on other planets nor in deep space. Seven Eves and Luna New Moon are also good, all make a kind of new pessimistic hard sci-fi trilogy.
