10 year old Mercedes SUV probably needs a new transmission. Has 105,000 miles on it. Can put a replacement transmission is for about $3,500. May run for another 2-3 years. Or get a new car. Problem is there aren't any new cars. Went to two dealerships today. Drove a new Ford Edge that has a MSRP of $42k and then went to the Nissan place but they didn't really have any cars. Will probably go to a couple of more tomorrow. I'm wavering back and forth between putting the new tranny in or getting a new car. I don't know how long I can limp along with it as is. I also hate to pay nearly full sticker for a new car. A used car makes sense but there really aren't many of those and the prices are nearly equal to new. It's a screwy time for sure.
Has anyone else been looking at this lately?

That seems kind of young for a transmission. Maybe get a second opinion first?

BUY IT.

You can change the tranny in a weekend. Mercedes were built to be worked on at home, no specialty tools needed other than a flywheel holder which is ten bucks, or DM me and I'll lend you mine.

You can consult me, I have three Mercedes and the computer system for the entire line of Mercedes/Dodge/Sprinter etc.

The transmission you need is the 722.9, and make sure you get the new conductor plate too.

My son and I have changed the engine and transmission in my convertible, it took a weekend and about 900 in used parts off ebay.

You'll save thousands on insurance, and you'll have pride in owning a car you work on.

I call my little SL the Donkey...it's white, carries two people and one bag. If you hang around, you'll see why.

You've got to be kidding. Mercs are just about the highest maintenance vehicles you can own and parts are going to be fucking impossible once the supply chain really takes a shit.

OP, get a used Honda or Toyota or whatever you see the most of in the nearest salvage yard. Sometimes they'll let you go out and walk the yard.

If you're handy with a wrench, Mercedes are easy to work on.

Heck, the computer system will walk you through it step by step as well.

Mercs keep their resale value, why throw money down the tube, when you can be safe and sane in a merc.

I reject the thesis but let's go with it for a second. Mercs are designed -- as are most German cars -- to need to be worked on. Which is completely unnecessary for modern vehicles. Oil changes and coolant changes...a modern vehicle shouldn't need more than that for years. Now, do they make them that way because its some weird quirk of German mindset or because it is a revenue stream for Mercedes. Probably both.

Also, outside of the Sprinter which is seeing artificially high re-sale due to the van-life craze and the fact that previous generations were actually somewhat decent, everyone I know who has bought a new Mercedes has seen 30-50% depreciation within 1-2 years.

This is an awesome response

Yeah wow, proof it never hurts to ask!

Shit just flies from my fingers, if you were to meet me, you'd know my fingers do all the talking, I'm too shy to speak.

What?!?! Have you ever done a timing chain on a w123 D240?

No, but for those who know how to do it it's a breeze.

Have you ever replaced a heater core in a dodge caravan? You have to remove the complete undercarriage and windshields to accomplish that feat. They built it around the core, it was a lonely little core going down an assembly line, and a car grew around it.

Germans know how to design a car for the all-around Dad's garage...

I'm a Honda guy, which means I'm a GM guy now, which is fine cause the 64 Vette was one of the first cars I learned to work on.

I do love me a good 1984 e190.

A couple years ago? I'd say get a new truck/car, because at the the point that SUV is at you could replace the trans and have something else go wrong the next month. Now you're locked in sorta speak since you just did all that work+money for the trans and keep fixing more and more shit. I was in a similar situation except with me it was a timing chain. Drove it to the dealer for a trade-in with the engine screaming.

Now? Everything is overpriced as shit and dealers can pick and choose their customers. A lot of the rebates are gone. I wouldn't bank on keeping a Merc SUV around but maybe pick up a ~5 year-old reliable something from the top 3 (Nissan isn't one of them).

Nissan still having problems with their CVTs?

With as shit as their engines are you'll be lucky for the vehicle to make it to the point of needing transmission work.

[–] 0 pt

No idea I've had Nissans but never a CVT. Just by the design and $$$ for special transmission fluid I avoided them. Nissans have been second rate overall for awhile now. Ford/Toyota/Honda are my top three.

As far as I know, most Nissan used CVT transmissions since the early 2000s.

Everyone that I knew that had one had at least one early transmission failure.

with a 10 year old Mercedes you are fucked either way. The last good Mercedes were made in 1990 and Buy a used car. Try to find a 2000-2005 buick with a 3.8L, or a 15-20 year old Lexus with a v8. Same era Toyota highlander would be third on my list. My youngest car is 21 years old, my other cars are 23 years old and 30 years old. I do my own repairs.

Dude just fix Mercedes engines last a long time even there gas motors. Good oil change intervals air filter and motor will run fine keep up on valve lash and timing components maintenance is a up front short term price compared to new shit. Fix sell trade for a diesel. 80's Mercedes diesel are badass nothing to get over mill miles. A 600k motor is worth 10k for there reliability

Get a used Toyota my last Tacoma had 380,000 miles till a head gasket went bad, ill be replacing th engine soon and keep going, in the meantime i bought a 4runner that will get me buy till then +, go for the older models their way easy to work on plus the newer ones are not built so well.

[–] 0 pt

Used Tacomas are so insanely priced, that is one vehicle I would just buy new

i got my 4runner for 2800.00 with 180,000 miles which is nothing on these vehicles plus its got the chain timing belt that pretty much lasts the life of the vehicle.

[–] 0 pt

I would fix it yourself and get rid of it. Luxury vehicles like Mercedes, Audis, BMWs go for WAY cheaper after about 100,000 miles on them because the service costs start to go through the roof after that. It might not be big things but there are so many moving parts on those that things will keep breaking.

[–] 0 pt

fix. new cars are not worth 60,000

10 year old Mercedes SUV

Stay the fuck away from anything German over 5 years old, if you want a reliable or cheap to repair vehicle (not necessarily both), go with either Japanese or American the only exceptions in the European camp is Volvo or Saab if you still want something of the European variety.

105,000 miles

Only an absolute masochist would buy a German car with that many miles on it.

The reason it needs a trans already is because the transmissions in them are shit. There’s a good chance the used one will be shit if not immediately not long after install. Jeep started using trans mission from Mercedes in the 2000’s and nothing but problems. Mercedes where good cars in the 80’s. Not that it’s important but they make think of niggers,re watch fentanyl Floyd video.

NWO buying up used cars at nearly original retail price, or higher to destroy them. People aren't going to buy an EV if there are all these used cars around.

You fucked up when you bought that eurotrash.

Now that your in it, might as well go with it. Get a new transmission.

Another option is , drive around, look for cars on people's property that look like they haven't moved in a minute. Go knock on the door and ask the people what they want for it.

This time buy something american, or at the very least japanese.
