The government produce enormous amount of bullshit even now when it is all can be exposes on internet. Imagine the level of bullshit when there wasn't any way to expose them 50 years ago, they could say that there are dinosaurs' bones on the moon but they forgot to take them to earth. People would believe that. At this point I doubt that official narrative about social and economical aspects of society are at least somehow true.
