Vitamin D is actually an essential hormone which modulates an incredible number of processes in the body and especially the immune system. If you don't get a lot of sun on your bare skin so your body can make what ot needs each day you need at least 10,000 units of D.

The daily recommended amounts was found to be miscalculated by 10x due to a math error.

And vitamin D like testosterone is fat soluble so if you are fat you need more because it gets diluted too much.
