Here's my Answer : Because the medical industry with all its pharmaceutical companies are a bunch of evil greedy bastards; and I'm not using the word 'evil' lightly. If it wasn't for all the evil bastards, the medical industry would be much smaller. There would be cures instead of lucrative treatments. The medical industry would be focussed more on injuries instead of diseases. Broken bones and severed nerves, which on not as common, would be the focus of the day. I am very close to coming to the conclusion that cancer and other diseases are man-made for the purpose of profit. I don't think God would have put those pestilences on this Earth.

I'm not sure if it's greed, or pragmatism, but a lot of the pharmaceuticals are designed to eliminate specific symptoms of a larger problem. So, high blood pressure for instance can be a problem, so someone solves it. It's easy to solve a single problem, like hypertension. Makes sense, but, a better solution would be to solve the root cause of the high blood pressure.

But that would mean getting people to eat healthy, to take care of their bodies by being active, working out, and avoiding all the "bad" stuff out there like smoking and alcohol and sitting on ass watching TV. Eliminating that stuff would probably resolve most health conditions. But how do you make that happen?

So, are they being greedy by not screaming about root causes? Maybe. But, maybe they're being pragmatic, know that they can't control behaviors, can't solve root causes, and so they do what they can. And make a fuckton doing it.

There's definitely some evil people, and most definitely many greedy ones, but I think overall their goals are at worst ambivalent regarding the outcomes for people.
