Yes, it depends on your time horizon. If things are really immediate, only food and water matter. But if you have a longer horizon, barter is less efficient. Use the appropriate one for the circumstance. I don't think we're at a point where currency/money are irrelevant.
The problem is people aren't familiar with what the value of the items are and are less likely to trade for it.
When you're using currency you're still bartering just using a medium of exchange. When the medium of exchange is uncommon it is indistinguishable from straight barter.
