Diesel engines are not reduced in complexity. Diesel engines use high pressure oil pumps to pressurize engine oil to 1700+ psi to open injectors And most are turbo. Gas engines in tractors are usually carbureted making them as simple as internal combustion engines get. That being said diesel is a lubricant and gasoline a solvent making Diesel engines last thousands of hours longer than gasoline engines. Even more so when said engine is idled for extended periods of time.

If that's how new diesels work then I'm glad to have my old tractor.

Before high pressure direct injection systems Diesel engines where garbage. It is the technology that made diesel viable. Without it most of would never have heard of Diesel engines.
