Not a John Deer because you will not actually own it, only license it's use from Deer... and they will not let you repair it your self.

These days I am a fan of the Kabota tractors.

The ones with all the electronics cannot be had with a <$20k budget.

the electronics

Are quite literally what ruin it.

I like Kubota, too. I feel there is more value for the price point.

I'll recommend Kubota as well

yup. I was able to pick up a Kubota L series 4wd hydrostatic with a couple add-ons, backhoe and even came with a trailer. all together was about 24. if you have a mountain to get up, I wouldn't go any smaller due to lower hp in the 'B' series. I realize that's outside OP's pricerange but I was also offered a zero interest loan when I bought mine. had to shop around.

very happy with it. definately use the backhoe every week.

good luck OP.

I am a fan of my Kubota although I wish I got a bigger tractor.

Got the BX when I probably should've gotten the LX or L. Oh well.
