Not a John Deer because you will not actually own it, only license it's use from Deer... and they will not let you repair it your self.

These days I am a fan of the Kabota tractors.

[–] 2 pts

The ones with all the electronics cannot be had with a <$20k budget.

[–] 2 pts

the electronics

Are quite literally what ruin it.

I like Kubota, too. I feel there is more value for the price point.

[–] 0 pt

I'll recommend Kubota as well

Not to mention deere just went woke. Fuck JD.

yup. I was able to pick up a Kubota L series 4wd hydrostatic with a couple add-ons, backhoe and even came with a trailer. all together was about 24. if you have a mountain to get up, I wouldn't go any smaller due to lower hp in the 'B' series. I realize that's outside OP's pricerange but I was also offered a zero interest loan when I bought mine. had to shop around.

very happy with it. definately use the backhoe every week.

good luck OP.

I am a fan of my Kubota although I wish I got a bigger tractor.

[–] 1 pt

which model did you get?

[–] 0 pt

Got the BX when I probably should've gotten the LX or L. Oh well.

I go used. Learn about what to look for when buying. Tractor Mike videos on shittube are good.

Figure out if you want diesel or gas. Diesel has less to go wrong due to reduced complexity, but is generally more expensive when something does. They also can be a pain in extreme cold when diesel gels and you have to use an anti gel or wait for another day to use it.

Check if you can find or buy a manual as that's very useful. Plan to change fluids and filters when you buy it.

Bring a voltmeter to verify the alternator works, check ground for leaks, bring cardboard to put under it to check for runtime leaks when you start it.

Cracked tires are OK as long as they aren't too bad. Tires are expensive and a big job.

Drive it through all gears. Check for overheating and non working gauges.

Diesel engines are not reduced in complexity. Diesel engines use high pressure oil pumps to pressurize engine oil to 1700+ psi to open injectors And most are turbo. Gas engines in tractors are usually carbureted making them as simple as internal combustion engines get. That being said diesel is a lubricant and gasoline a solvent making Diesel engines last thousands of hours longer than gasoline engines. Even more so when said engine is idled for extended periods of time.

If that's how new diesels work then I'm glad to have my old tractor.

https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/milestone-mobility-man-drove-first-truck-diesel-direct-injection-90-years-ago/ If by new you mean post depression! Before high pressure direct injection systems Diesel engines where garbage. It is the technology that made diesel viable. Without it most of would never have heard of Diesel engines.

Thanks for info. I have access to a good diesel mechanic who is very reasonable does side work at his house.

Good advice. My Grandpa had a Case tractor and I loved it.

Another vote for Kubota. If you buy a used one between 6yrs and 8yrs old, chances are high that I personally either made parts for or welded something to it. I was a shit welder. Don't buy those.

Will it ever need to be transported? Go with a backhoe if you can find one. Around 20k you're looking at 20+ year old unit. Probably won't have the auxiliary hydraulic lines to run an auger but you may get lucky. Skid loaders have a lot of attachment options but can't dig like a backhoe or excavator can. I picked up a 2010 john deere 35D long arm excavator for 10k with track problems. I can fix it myself as it doesn't have all the electronics on it like the new ones. I've used it for production work still broken but the track pops off at least twice a day, huge pain the dick.

Find a sub compact tractor maybe kabota. I have a cub cadet with a hoe on the back and it works well.

You don't close on a homestead.

[–] 1 pt

How much work do you have to do with it. You might be better off just renting one.

[–] 0 pt

Good amount of clearing and mowing up front. Junk removal as well. Then fencing digging post holes.. I also have side work I can use it for as well

[–] 0 pt

Do you need a full sized one or will a mini do it? Do you need tracks, or can you use a wheeled one. (I was leaning toward tracks since we already have a tractor)

I don't really have any answers, but I've been thinking about getting one myself. Mowing, I'd get a tractor with a bush hog. Maybe the same with the post holes. Cutting in power lines and water lines, digging ditches or putting in septic, I'd go with the excavator. The tractor will be much more useful than the excavator, I'd guess. I had a nice massey. Loved it. Get a box blade, front end loader, bush hog, rotary tiller and a wood chipper to use with the PTO and you are in high cotton.

If you have heavy woods to clear, hire a dozer. Those are just my opinions. There are a lot of people on here smarter than me about this stuff.

Good luck finding a used tractor that's worth a shit.

Kabota are in high demand.

The Earth is flat. You can't actually excavate down. This thread is a jewish lie by the freemasons who are controlling you with their lizard overlords.

Finally someone speaks the truth

[–] 0 pt

15k to 20k for the entire budget or just for the excavator?

[–] 0 pt

Entire budget.. I really just need the front loader part and the digging arm tonstart.. going to be clearing land and hauling junk.. probaboy gonna get a dump trailer to haul it around as well and for side jobs .. so budge might be higher if you include the trailer

From personal experience, get a good used skid steer, with some extra weight in the back. A tractor can often be limited, whereas you can get just about any kind of attachment for a skidsteer, and it will get around in areas that a tractor cries in.

do your homework, and make sure you understand the dealers obligations/expertise. also, be prepared to learn alot about machinery. when i first started having mechanical issues(DEF sensor, or other faggotry, it ran me 900 just to get a mechanic out here).

i wouldnt use anything else when it comes to homesteading.

[–] 0 pt

Look like I'm getting a skid steer excavator? 35 hp to 45 probably diesel. Can move dirt. Dig holes and trenches and pull lawn mower and other farm type tools... I have 45 days to research and might be renting the 5 acres for a. Couple months as well while I finish some other projects

good choice. youll be glad you did
