They have been building the fiber optic network there. And most importantly Afghanistan is necessary to their belt and road initiative; the Sino-Afgan railway is just the beginning.

Opium/heroin. The Taliban doesn't allow opium poppy cultivation.

The Taliban provided guest-right to Al-Qaeda and allowed it to openly operate training camps. Said terrorists killed a whole lot of Americans. The USA should never have tried to nation build in Afghanistan, but shutting that terrorist shithole down would have been beneficial.
