Good idea, I've tried meditation in the past and had mixed results.
Also, exercise if you don't already. I used to be a huge insomniac until I started, and now I usually pass out the second my head hits the pillow. Diet can also affect sleep. Put together a pre-sleep routine as well. Routines get you into certain mindsets, so if you always do the same thing, every night, before bed, your mind will get into the mindset of "It's time to sleep now" and you'll get to sleep faster. That's why if there's something I NEED to do, I'll put together a simple routine to do before hand, just for the mindset.
You know you are probably right, I don't exercise on a schedule but I walk about 3 miles per day for work. I also have a treadmill I use at home. My Diet is well what my wife makes me, I generally will forget to eat at all unless she makes me something.
I really should have a pre bed time routine but I don't I spend so much time working/here on poal that between being a family man work and poal I barely have time to regulate anything. Eventually I'll work out a routine it'll just take time to figure out how to work it all out.
The pre-bed routine doesn't need to be anything elaborate. It can be as simple as a wank, a shower, a warm glass of milk, and mediate until you sleep. Most of these you're probably doing anyway. Lifting made the biggest difference for me when it came to exercise.
For diet, just make sure you're eating your fruits and veggies. Have your wife jam 'em down your throat if she has to. Sets a good example for the kids, too.
If screen time before bed is a problem, get apps for your phone and programs for your computer that get rid of blue light from your screens at a certain time. I used to use them, but I don't remember what they're called. Stopped because I started working 3rd shift, and I got annoyed of having my screen color skewed whenever I was awake.
