UPDATE EDIT: We found a dentist within a 2 hr drive that will do initial consult for free. Claims his staff can find funding for most of his clients. We are hopeful.

Ok Poalr Bears, I come to you in great need. Ten days ago my 42 y/o niece was severely beaten by her boyfriend of 6 months. He started the beating while she was asleep by hitting her in the face with a laptop. It got worse from there. Sweet guy.

Her jaw is broken in two places, most of her teeth are loose, and one tooth was moved from the side of her mouth to the back.

She had several other severe injuries but thankfully none of them ended up being life threatening.

The hospital released her Friday without addressing her mouth. She has no insurance.

She was living in a different state than most of the family when this happened. For a variety of reasons she couldn’t be cared for properly there. Her parents brought her back here.

All of her physical injuries will heal well enough on their own except her mouth. She’s in dire need of oral surgery.

The victims assistance in the state where she has been won’t return phone calls. No one there seems interested in helping us. Not the police nor the DA. It’s like they feel she’s out of state now, not our responsibility. The state where we reside says the crime didn’t happen in this state and there’s nothing available for victim assistance. The state’s donated dental program has a waiting list of over a year.

Do any of you have any idea of where we might turn to get her help? Our family is taking care of everything else but our financial resources are strained now.

I’m thanking you all in advance for your help. And please, no comments about her choice in men or putting herself in this situation.

Local dental college, at least in my area will provide at a deep discount.

When I was in college they had a dentistry office where all the students and professors did "lab" hours by working on actual people. It worked out well.

Seriously, though: You have to crowdsource this. If you take one photo of her mouth/face from immediately after the incident and post it online, you’ll probably raise like $20K in no time. Some of these buzzards here can tell you the names of the various crowd source sites. One is called GoFundMe.

I"m sorry to hear about your niece. It sounds like she needs maxillofacial surgery which, when medically necessary, should be covered by health insurance.

Also, have you contacted a lawyer about getting some money out of this guy?

She has no insurance. Someone else in the family is working in the legal end. I’m researching the dental and. But yes, we’re working on getting money but I don’t think he had much.

I know people who travel for hours to cross the border to Mexico for their dental work. They get their prescriptions filled there too.

Something needs to be said. Should have been said years ago. Men don't just pick up a laptop and start beating women in the face with it. There were warnings long before this happened.

There should be no helping this woman until she admits all her mistakes. If you give her a pass, she's just going to get into the same situation again.

Try going right to dentists and tell them your story, see if you can find one willing to help. You don't need the first one to help you, or the second, but one of them will.

Seriously though, she needs to sue the guy in civil court in addition to cooperating in the criminal case. I'm guessing this gem of a human isn't employed though so while she would EASILY be awarded all of her medical costs in court, collecting would be next to impossible...

Most doctors and dental clinics offer payment plans or can put her in touch with lenders like care credit.

She was refused Care Credit. I contacted a large school of dentistry within the state. Because she had been out of state for even 4 months she no longer met the requirement of 12 of consecutive months of residency.
