Let's suppose that there's such a thing as a soul. Something not explainable by science, something from another reality, another level, another dimension or whatever. We have this vessel, our body, that's a doppelganger of our soul, I'm talking about some Avatar thing, but not driven by human technology. Then, we're here to be tested for whatever reason, and when the vessel is exhausted or broken, our real existence wakes up. The system is kinda backuped or replicated in real time, but when your physical brain is damaged, well, your soul will just experience whatever the body experienced. When this body dies, your soul will evolve by these experiences, maybe by the suffering, maybe by the love received by your family. If your brain is fully operational, then all of your experiences will be aggregated to your soul. I just made up this bullshit, I don't believe in souls or after life or anything else. But as said, it's a matter of faith.
It's called faith. I don't lean either way i think both sides make good arguements. But faith doesn't need hard facts.
Faith is not based on repeatable empirical facts. It’s in fact the entire opposite of it.
I plan to answer this one later today, but you are absolutely right it is the opposite, thats kind of the point. The entire point of asking for faith is asking you to believe something that cannot be proven. IF you could prove it, it wouldn't be faith. I totally get why this bothers a lot of people, however its literally the basis for western civilization faith, without it America never happened, western values never happens. So its why I choose to see some value in it, and try to have it myself. I don't blame people who don't have it I get why someone wouldn't even want to have it. However I choose to and its served me well, its made my life better and directed me to do things I probably wouldn't otherwise have done.
Apologies for the wall of text, just thought my thoughts might add something to the comment chain.
I totally understand your point.
I grew up inspired by faith to a point where I realized that I could be a better person without it.
Knowing that people care and love me for who I am is the best motivator.
a soul and a brain are theoretically different things. The way our soul would behave, or think outside of this body is something outside our ability to comprehend.
The thing is that we haven't been able to prove the existence of a soul, and the more science advances the more we can see that there's no need for a soul to exist.
The first point is true. The second is subjective and I disagree.
The second is subjective and I disagree.
Lots of superstitious beliefs died in the Western world with the progress of science.
We believed people were possessed by demons, when in fact it was related to brain diseases.
Still happening in south America and the African continent though.
You know I’d like to point something out here that I don’t think can be overstated, you and I fundamentally disagree on the nature of the universe. We have set aside this disagreement and worked together to put something good into the world. I hope people that think we don’t disagree on anything are paying attention, you know who you are ;)
I would argue that just because you cannot remember something doesn’t mean your soul doesn’t. It’s faith it can’t be explained rationally. I have faith that the western world will return to its former glory, I have no proof this will happen but I hope my faith brings it slightly closer to reality, so I don’t explain it is my answer and I probably never will.
LOL "matter of faith" .... LOL One can investigate these questions oneself without swallowing dogmas. There are ancient traditions that don't ask you to believe, merely show you what to do to see for yourself. A human can percieve what is beyond the physical.
While the methodology of science is very useful; Scientism does shove a load of crap into your brain. What is taught as science is not even self-consistent. For instance, "race is a social construct" is BS coming from the science establishment.
