Back in 1998, host companies default ftp permissions were often rw. So, a large chunk of websites in the world had anon logins and free reigns for whoever wanted to change something. It was glorious.

Randomly , some strange file would appear on your ftp site but you didn't care because it was the wild west. And you didn't even care to patch it. The only people on the internet were affluent.
