Choosing to run a website is a personal choice. I ran a popular forum site for years, on my own dime and didn't ask anyone to donate because that's how it was back then. If the intent is to run a site as a business, then charge a subscription fee or sell services or run advertisements. Poal does neither of those things and donations are voluntary. It's not freeloading if there is no obligation to pay. The bills are being paid to run this site, but maybe you need to ask yourself how they are being paid...it might give you a clue.
