Would you push that button?
Is it a random, single child from all over the world that will be murdered by the button, like a heart attack? Then Yes, I would. Absolutely. Children get murdered all the time. Pakistani grooming gangs murder children in our countries. I would use that money to support families in my country and feel like I made a decent trade.
If I had to murder that child myself and will be videotapped to be blackmailed for eternity, I certainly wouldn't.
That said, I get your point. People do horrible things to get rich. And they feel prideful about it. On the other hand people also feel pride for helping others, helping their family etc. And as such I don't think the problem is pride itself.
Personally, I'm more into coding than rapping or raping children.
I'm thinking about Notch (Minecraft creator) or Scott McCawthon (who made that stupid horror game and lately got bad press for being a Christian who spent big money on the Trump campaign).
How would you shame them for being more successful?
Why would I shame them? They haven't done anything wrong as far as I know
While I do appreciate the sensation of fulfillment that a job well done procures me, I can't say I take pride in doing what I do, whatever that is. Never did.
That's two different things
Edit: didn't the minecraft guy sold out to MS while swearing for years he wouldn't? I think he did...
I don't think there's much to be proud of here, while I clearly do see where the benefit is
Yes, he sold to MS. I don't know if he promised not to, but he probably did.
I don't think it's necessary to be perfect or never do anything against your principles in order to feel pride. Similar to how, having one sad month in your life doesn't mean you can't overall be a happy person. Or how shoplifing as a teenager doesn't mean you can't become a charitable person later in life. Or conversely, how complimenting a person doesn't undo strangling a housepet.
It's more about general tendencies and overall excess in either dimension. And even if notch sold out, being able to say you created minecraft and made millions, is still a cool thing to say and I wish I could one day say something similar.

Sorry to hear that.
You sound smarter and more reasonable than most people on this website, so I hope you find a way to change that.

Cool from your own point of view, cool in the sense that you imagine people are going to be impressed by who you are. Why? Because they wouldn't be without that? Fame? You want to be able to rub your achievement in everybody else's nose in case they start to pose as a threat to your judgement? It's not only going to attract good intents and good sentiments.
And who are you going to impress in the end, who's going to admire you? People you don't give much of a fuck about mostly. Your parents, your relatives? Is that even required for them to love you? Maybe it is, what do I know.
Anyways, I wish you to get there, at least, you'll be able to ask yourself "and what now?"
My ambition isn't to become rich and famous. As a matter of fact the famous part is bothering me quite a bit. I want best of both worlds; Rich and anonymous.
That's what I want. I don't want the moneymaking machine to be directly connected to my identity, while still being able to use the money. And of course it has to be legal. And it's difficult because these days pretty much every money making legal activity leads right back at you with a little bit of research. How can I properly tell muhammad tyrone and shlomo to go fuck themselves that way and make a living out of it on top of that? I can't... Except, if I find a way to remain anonymous. As the saying goes, you can't shoot at what you can't see. Anonymity is paramount, because, why would I want to advertise myself as a target?
