What do you want to use it for? The "best" engine is highly dependent on the context of its use.

As others have said, diesel engines don't have a carby. But they've been around long before electronic fuel injection.

I need to do research how did they work with out carb?

I was just thinking of a old truck to put it in good get out of dodge vehicle or just beach trips camping what ever

The fuel injectors are basically a small piston pump that was driven via a cam running on the cam shaft. From my understanding, EFI replaced the cam with a solenoid, allowing for much better control of timing and other characteristics of the fuel delivery. The only reason you'd probably need to go back to mechanical injection might be for EMP hardening, but in that scenario you've probably got other things to worry about.
