There are no carbureted diesel engines. They are fuel injected and use compression to ignite, no spark plugs.

Thanks for the education.. before fuel injection how did they work or that was always the case?

[–] 1 pt

Always the case. Diesel doesn't explode from spark it explodes from compression.

WTF is carbonated diesel? Carbs cant work without spark plugs.

Speaking from ignorance.. I'm looking for a low tech diesel engine easy to work on will run a long time

Mid 90's Cummins (Dodge)still have mechanical pumps

Caterpillar 3208.

They'll run a million miles. Keep the oil changed.

I don't think you can use a carburetor with diesel fuel.

Ford Sodaspring turbo late

What do you want to use it for? The "best" engine is highly dependent on the context of its use.

As others have said, diesel engines don't have a carby. But they've been around long before electronic fuel injection.

I need to do research how did they work with out carb?

I was just thinking of a old truck to put it in good get out of dodge vehicle or just beach trips camping what ever

The fuel injectors are basically a small piston pump that was driven via a cam running on the cam shaft. From my understanding, EFI replaced the cam with a solenoid, allowing for much better control of timing and other characteristics of the fuel delivery. The only reason you'd probably need to go back to mechanical injection might be for EMP hardening, but in that scenario you've probably got other things to worry about.

Probably something upto the late 90s. I think the Cummings 5.9L is still sold minimal electronics.

Best for what you want: 6.9idi in the old fords
