I’m fighting this one with my boy. Just turned 7, and loves video games. All his friends have a Nintendo switch.
I pirated some nes, snes, and n64 games that he occasionally gets to play, but it’s never enough. And despite getting him outside, or just sending him outside to play, there’s always that disappointment that he can’t just stay in and play….
You need to find something to kindle his love for the outdoors. Camping, hiking, boating, fishing, anything with the dog, and so on. Get out there and make memories, pay attention to anything he seems to spend time doing outside.
Yeah. Working on it. At this point, he loves soccer. It’s a start….
I started making wooden swords around his age. Get him a saw and some planks of wood. Draw a sword. Have him cut it out. When I got older I got more into sanding and staining out painting the wood. Someone bought a sword from me for a cosplay and it was the best moment of my life.
Whittling, turning tree branches into spears, turning Popsicles into switchblades:

Give your kid stupid hobbies to have fun with! And if you want to keep him off screens you have to get him into D&D. When I was a kid we used to go out and play zombies in the woods, now everyone plays D&D instead. See if there are any groups for kids around. If you wanted to throw a starter campaign for his friends they could make their own weapons from Popsicles and learn the rules, then play by themselves in the future.
