What about talking to them from a position of ignorance? Tell them something has been messing up your garden, and that you plan to put out bait/poison/whatever. That you know their dog gets out at night sometimes, and that you wanted to give them the heads up to make sure their dog doesn’t accidentally get in it.
Hell yea, except they might use that as an admission if guilt and let it happen. Would maybe work so long as I don’t actually follow through with the poisoning.
I wouldn’t recommend following through with it. Trapping maybe, but not killing.
Trapping it is an easy way to get toy to go back to your neighbors and let them know they’ve fucked up. The whole, “we really lucked out that I just trapped it rather than accidentally killing your dog. But now that we know he’s been messing up my garden, what will you do to make sure it stops so that I don’t have to?”
I’ll look more into trapping then. Then tell them, ‘hey, look what I found!’
