I live in a pretty decent neighborhood and don’t want any trouble with the neighbors, but the problem is the next door neighbors have a completely fenced off yard yet they leave the gate open at night and their dog is allowed to roam free. It usually sneaks and takes a shit in the yard which I have dealt with all year, however now it has gone too far and shit right on top of some garlic that is almost ready for harvest. I work 3rd shift so I can stalk the yard and catch the bastard in the act if I need to. What would you guys recommend?

Will your garlic plants be damaged if you rinse them off with a hose? Dogs shit to mark territory, you have to be the alpha here and show the dog it is in YOUR territory. The dog won't shit on someone else's turf.

Are you implying that he should shit on his own garlic to claim the territory from the dog?

Use the hose to rinse off the garlic and hose down the dog. It's summer, you claim the dog looked tired, hosed it down to keep it cool. Wet dog smells, neighbors will keep dog in yard to keep him from smelling like wet dog.

I had not considered that, it's not a bad idea, shit becomes compost.

No, but dog shit contains parasites and lots of bacteria. You don’t want it sitting on top of your garlic bulb.

So rinse it off with a garden hose, and if you see the dog near your stuff hose it down. He won't attack you, it's hot nowadays, but the dog will know it's your turf. If the dog goes back wet to his owners they'll close the gate on their own or confront you instead. Just tell them you thought the pooch needed to cool off in this summer heat.
