It was all about oil and diamonds. Diamonds are worthless rocks outside of industrial manufacturing. They had coal but no oil. Africa was about obtaining resources to which they didn't have within their own borders. Britian and America embargoed Japan and their new navy of oil. They knew this would force Japan to declare war. The first thing America did was declare war against Japan and Germany.
