McAfee was murdered. Some would say it was justice for him having created McAfee Antivirus, the worst malware that has ever been devised by man, but others would say he was targeted by the Deep State because he talked too much.

In fact no software that was invented in the early 90s was bad. Everything was written in assembly and was always fantastic. For example, the Norton Doctor people, before becoming Symantec, were, quite frankly, amazing. Defrag and scandisk was beyond what anyone was doing.
I will say there were strong rumors that mcafee people were releasing viruses so his company would be the only ones who could remove them. Yes, literally creating the problem then selling the cure.
In some ways Bill Gates's windows 95 (whistler) pretty much ruined everything, forever. Assembly died and nobody wrote clean code again. My computer today is still slower than 1994.
