Like if you take rabid pro-vax advocates (those who pressure others to take vaccines with a kind of seething hatred), are they motivated by a genuine belief that the vaccine is going to strengthen the population, or do they secretly just want to poz as many people as possible because they quietly romanticise the idea of a society full of weak and wretched people like Les Miserables?

"A man always has two reasons for doing anything: a good reason and the real reason."

Their actions seem to suggest that they don't actually care if their agendas are beneficial to people or not. They don't care about reasoned arguments and don't want them spoken or heard, because they don't want a better approach to be identified, they just want their approach with their outcome.

It would appear that they really just want to see the people around them reduced to a weakened state so they can find meaning in being all touchy feely and "helpful" to those around them in a new social structure.

Edit: perhaps NPC was the wrong term here. I wasn't thinking of the type of ordinary person who has an honest job, goes to work each day and does what they're told without thinking, but more the kind of person who holds up a banner and screams at people, but malfunctions if you express a different view to theirs.

You lack empathy.

An NPC is someone incapable of critical thinking on any but the most superficial level. They are the kind of people who take cold medicine. You can tell them that cold medicine only treats symptoms, treating the symptoms will not cure the disease, and that the symptoms are how your body treats the disease so repressing them makes you stay sick longer. They might even agree with you. A week later they'll be taking cold medicine again. Because they have a cold, and it's right in the name "cold medicine."

Put yourself in the shoes of a person like this. With no way to reason through even the simplest puzzles yourself you have to find simpler ways to get answers that are better than a 50/50 coin toss. You side with the experts. You side with famous people. You side with academics. You side with the talking heads on the news and you side with the angry mob. Because you have no capacity to prove them wrong if both Drs you consulted said your a woman trapped in a man's body and you need to cut off your dick, who are you to disagree?

Ok, so looking at these experts, talking heads, socialists on campus, etc, the people in positions of influence who shut down contrary opinions; are those people simply following the heard too?

Largely, yes. Obviously there are some jews at the top telling them what to say, but once the info gets into the hugbox they're just repeating the same narrative to each other. They try to add their own flavor to it to sound cutting edge, but this almost always takes the form of being more radical because they're incapable of actually adding a twist, but they are capable of turning the volume up.

This is why the judenpresse only needs to call Rittenhouse racist and after a few cycles on reddit the retards will convince themselves that he's hitler incarnate is gassing niggers and goosestepping around a Kenosha carwash.
