Very short explanation:- They remind you of just how little it takes to be in the same position of powerlessness and fear. So the best you can do is distance yourself psychologically and vilify them, thereby removing ANY empathy or understanding, as to do these things would force you to see just how delicate and precarious your OWN position in society is.
