Before lock downs, I would some times visit a friend at happy hour for a beer. It seems it is now nearly impossible to find a bar or restaurant (even 5 star ones) without a TV playing sports non stop.

I noticed how many patrons seemed to being paying attention with interest to what was going on the college basketball games... WHY?

These are not local teams. They probably have little or affiliation with the schools or players. Why should anyone care if group one of black jumpers defeats group two of black jumpers? To me, it's like cheering for which flock of crows will make it to a tree first.

I personally find it as a horrible eye sore to see these black bodies running across the screen tossing a ball. I know I am in the minority.

Can anyone here who can relate please explain this appeal to me?

It is called 'betting'. Most sports would not exist without betting, sadly even college.

Ask around. Look at the Vegas betting numbers. Most of those people are not in Vegas.

People go to bars to get out of the house and socialize. Sometimes there are gaps in the conversation so any moving images on a screen gives people something to stare at silently for a while. 99% don't care about it but pretend to be fascinated to avoid awkward silence. I would rather see images of flying crows.

They're degenerate gamblers who placed a bet with their bookies, hoping the team they picked covers the spread.
