Large part of Canada's identity and culture was define only by "not being Americans". So for a while, being liberal was a way to not be American.

What percentage of Canadians live in or near urban centers? Population density is strongly correlated with liberalism/progressivism. Take a look at Scandinavian nations. Many such cases!

It became multi cultural when the Europeans came. Before then it was a mono tribe culture of surviving, thriving and killing. When the Europeans came around they did the same thing just with top hats. That is the start of Canada's multicultural. Fact check true from your métis cousin.
