Apart from the obvious “jewed to high heaven”, is there anything of value to be found in that field?

Is there any part of modern psychology that isn't pervasively tainted with Freudian psychoanalysis? I personally have very little use for the field and I find that most of the supposedly insightful points about human behavior that psychology brings up are just as clearly explained as man's eternal struggle against his own conscience and the existence of an external, objective authority which our fallen nature seeks to reject.

Psychology is the tool used to normalize that rejection and to get people to embrace relativism.

Yes, has nothing to do with Freud or dreams or your sad childhood. It has been proven effective for depression and anxiety and is widely used for those conditions.

>You work with a mental health counselor (psychotherapist or therapist) in a structured way, attending a limited number of sessions. CBT helps you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so you can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.

>CBT can be a very helpful tool ― either alone or in combination with other therapies ― in treating mental health disorders, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or an eating disorder. But not everyone who benefits from CBT has a mental health condition. CBT can be an effective tool to help anyone learn how to better manage stressful life situations.

Fair point. I don’t quite know what I’m looking for - perhaps a conceptual flaw that makes it easier to approach the matter and be critical?

But it seems that it’s the usual suspects, then. Relativism and discord between theory and reality.

As a concept, studying human behavior and understanding how people think is useful. I just believe the paradigm from which you approach the topic is all-important.

In your opinion, what ought the approach then be?

Aside from the subconscious, most of Freud's ideas are wrong and there are various kinds of therapy besides Freudian psychoanalysis. Also, there's more to psychology than therapy.
