Yes, it's not an irredeemable field despite having many problems. If you want a good psychologist it's best to have a devout Christian one and cognitive behavioral therapy is extremely helpful for an array of issues. In the past, I thought "people need a good friend to talk to, not a therapist" but I now know people who've been helped by a therapist so now I think people need good friends and maybe a therapist. Some people are too quick to generalize their own negative experiences and condemn the whole field. Their experiences are likely valid and it's deeply unfortunate they couldn't receive the help they deserve, but it's still an irrational reaction.
I think it’s also a byproduct of holding severe disdain towards anything “modern” by virtue of association with current society.
Which, to be fair, is warranted. I get that you can lose out on a lot if you don’t give it a chance, but damn, it can also go south if you lower your mental barricades for just a moment.
