I'm always afraid of the "assumption close." The assumption close is a sales tactic whereby your potential buyer's frame of mind is controlled by your frame of mind. You choose your words and adopt the mindset according to the reality that they are already going to buy your product. An example is, "You're here to decide whether or not you want the sedan or the SUV." This sentence already assumes the buyer is going to buy a car. When it comes to the Left versus Right "choice"... notice that you are already assumption closed into being pro-war, anti-transparency, and pro-spying on you. With SARS COV 2, I think we, as a society, have an obligation to ask, "Hey... did the Wuhan Institute of Virology, in proxy partnerships with Microsoft, make a digital forgery of a genome?" All you crazy conspiracy theorists who think these people are into black magic... how about that for a spell? Conjuring a fake genome into reality? It is actually easy to do using CRISPR. You can assemble, piece by piece, a genomic sequence one nucleotide at a time. But, what are the odds that your fake sequence will reproduce? There is a lot of food for thought, there. The vast majority of the sequences we see are generated with the Illumina and other similar software, where the software makers are explicitly partnered with Microsoft. If you go to the BLAST database, most of what you see are sequences generated using the Wuhan reference genome and someone else's negative control list. It is very easy to only see what you want to see, in this circumstance, which is why the "*de novo*" conversation is the more relevant one. Personally, I came to the conclusion that it would be far easier for me to digitally mock up a fictional SARS COV 2 strain... my own de novo process... then forge the paper for the submission (I know... we still need to have the names of a reputable team).
