A few months ago they started rolling out the vaccine, at this time they may also have stopped using Ivermectin as a treatment (anectodal evidence also suggests that higher socioeconomic status indians are reluctant to use Ivermectin as it is seen as a treatment for poor people, they instead prefer the much more expensive and less effective Remsidivr or how ever the fuck you spell it).

The spike in cases and deaths, which in per capita terms is not really that bad, although the raw numbers look terrible, is likely due to increased testing (daily tests have increased dramatically, from ~600k to ~1.6M per day iirc) as well as changes in treatment and adverse reactions to the vaccine being labelled as COVID "cases". I'm not sure if testing protocols changed at all either. A simple change in the max Ct values for the PCR tests can have a dramatic effect on the positive rate, that sort of information is rather opaque at present though.

When presented with some sort of apocalyptic news by the MSM, it always pays to stop and look a bit further into the data. E.g. bodies floating in rivers.... that is something that has been happening in India for decades if not centuries, it's a nothing berger designed to frighten a western audience.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Thanks for this explanation. It's having the intended effect. Normies I know are citing it as the reason they've decided to get vaccinated.
