Good point, very poor approach. If someone said that to you would it make you want to look into it further or just avoid that person because they are an asshole? You shouldn't give them the excuse to ignore you because you are an asshole.
The better thing to say would be "there is a lot the mainstream media won't inform you about, you have to look outside of it to get the whole truth".
