Because liberalism is a strategy for the unproductive to steal from the productive. Thinking it's going to be logical or consistent means you don't understand it.
Leftism is no more an ideology than picking pockets. It's just a collection of tactics for robbing others. That's why it is useless to point out their hypocrisies, or to wreck your head trying to understand it as a coherent morality. If it gets them their way, it is good.
It's a bit more than that. It's also a strategy for rationalizing and justifying your weakness and cowardice. Once of my favorite quotes:

It's people who would never get anything in a world based off merit stealing so that they don't starve to death.
