Non-lethal means non-effective most times. The problem with a non-lethal shotgun round would be glancing blows, hitting non-critical parts of the body (non-dominant shoulder, for example), etc... Even with pistol rounds, you need to shoot until blood pressure drops below the consciousness threshold (i.e. there is enough bleeding). If you need to stop a threat, you need to stop a threat. Not kinda, sorta, maybe try to stop the threat. When someone is trying to stab someone else, you end the threat. Case closed. In a perfect world they live... But, in a perfect world, people wouldn't stab each other with 9-inch blades. People who talk about non-lethal options have probably never been in a life-threatening situation. (Not taking a shot at you... Just all the people who say things like: "Shoot him in the leg!")
