You may believe in their mythologised history, but they really gained traction together with the counter-reformation. They were part of the underground war against the Protestant nations. The counter-reformation was led by the Jesuits, who became "persecuted" to infiltrate the Protestant nations as refugees. It was a pincer movement: Theaters and schools for the masses, universities and secret societies for the elites.

This is a war between people who believe in Jesus as part of God, and the people who believe Jesus was a prophet and ordinary men can become god-like and take his place. The Protestants were formed because Rome tried to take the role of Jesus, with the Pope being God's representative. Freemasonry was the counter movement, tricking Bishops of the Church of England into accepting the Gnostic believes of their enemies.
