Is it as simple as cities are the most livable real-estate so they huddle around all the infrastructure (bus routes, sidewalks, walkability, etc)?

In the US, almost every minor city has an airport, and then most people will drive from wherever they land to where they're going: either rent a car or get a friend to pick them up. Taking a bus is cheaper, although, if it were not for the crowd, more pleasant and just as fast a lot of times. Trains here suck, though. Unless you are traveling along a specific East Coast corridor, the trains are intended for freight and act like it.
